Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) is an unemployment benefit paid by the Government of the UK to people who are unemployed and actively seeking work. There are two forms of Jobseeker’s Allowance, contribution-based and income-based. Universal Credit was due to replace Jobseeker’s Allowance and other benefits for 500,000 new claimants from 2013, and eventually will replace income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance entirely.
To be eligible for JSA, claimants must state that they are actively seeking work by filling in a Jobseeker’s Agreement form and attending a New Jobseeker interview (NJI). They must also go to a Job Centre every two weeks to “sign on”, that is, to certify that they are still actively seeking work. Claims for JSA are maintained by the Jobseeker’s Allowance Payment System (JSAPS).
You may get Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA) if the following apply:
– you’re 18 or over
– you’re under the State Pension age
– you’re not in full-time education
– you’re in England, Scotland or Wales
– you’re available for work
– you’re actively seeking work
– you work on average less than 16 hours per week
– your partner, works for less than 24 hours a week on average
– you have signed an agreement to look for work
– you don’t have an illness or disability which stops you from working.
To claim for JSA you will need to check you are eligible. You can call the number provided or seek advice via the official JSA website. If you believe you are eligible for JSA you will need to make a claim and attend an interview at your local Jobcentre Plus office. Once you receive your benefit you will need to make sure you keep to your agreement of seeking work. Your money will stop if you do not comply. You must go to a Jobcentre Plus office every 2 weeks (or when asked) to show how you’ve been looking for a job. This is known as ‘signing on’. You must show your work coach what you’ve been doing to look for work, for example proof of job applications and interviews. Payments are usually made every 2 weeks. All benefits, pensions and allowances are usually paid into your bank, building society or credit union account.

When payment can be stopped:
Your JSA payments will be stopped for a period if you don’t do something your work coach or the Work Programme asks you to do. This is called being ‘sanctioned’. For example, if you:
– don’t accept or keep to your agreement to look for work
– don’t go to a Jobcentre Plus office when asked
– turn down a job or training course
– don’t apply for any jobs you’re told about
– don’t take part in any interviews you’re invited to
– don’t go to any training booked for you or take part in employment schemes
– leave your last job or training without good reason or because of your behaviour.
