About BT Openreach
Openreach is a division of British Telecommunications plc and they run Britain’s digital network business. Openreach are the people who connect homes, mobile phone masts, schools, shops, banks, hospitals, libraries, broadcasters, governments and businesses – large and small – to the world. It is their mission to build the best possible network with the highest quality of service, and make sure that everyone in Britain can be connected.
Openreach are a wholesaler and have around 30,000 people who work on behalf of more than 590 communication providers. Businesses like Sky, TalkTalk, Vodafone and BT. Our fibre broadband network is the biggest in the UK, covering more than 27.4 million homes and business premises. Their technology is the platform for Britain’s thriving digital economy, which is the largest of the G20 countries.
Openreach are always working hard to give people the service and broadband speeds they need at work and at home. Over the last decade, they invested more than £11 billion into our network. And now manage more than 160 million kilometres of cable, from Scotland to Cornwall, and from Wales to the east coast.
Openreach are owned by BT Group, but independently governed by Openreach Limited. Openreach trades through British Telecommunications plc. The Openreach business is highly regulated, and more than 90 per cent of their revenues come from services that Ofcom oversee. In the year ending 31 March 2017, their revenues were £5.1 billion.
Openreach is made up of four parts – service delivery, infrastructure delivery, business and corporate delivery, and headquarters.
Openreach employs people who are hugely experienced, resourceful and innovative. They tackle complicated engineering problems – from coordinating works with councils, highways agencies, energy suppliers and landowners, to installing and maintaining the complex kit that provides ultrafast broadband services. They’ll go the extra mile and tackle any challenge to build a better, faster and more affordable network that helps our customers stay connected.
Openreach’s service delivery team:
Openreach service delivery team looks after the local access network and their communications provider customers. Made up of 18,000 engineers, you’ve probably seen them working at the side of the road or the top of a telephone pole. It’s their job to deliver the superfast connectivity that’s the backbone of our business. So they spend their time installing and repairing the phone and broadband lines that connect homes and businesses all over the country – whatever the weather.
Openreach’s infrastructure delivery team:
The 6,000 engineers in this team build and maintain the network that’s the basis of all our products and services. You won’t see them in homes and businesses though – that’s because they work on major restructuring and civil engineering projects to increase our fibre network across the country. They contributed to the Government’s success in achieving 95 per cent superfast fibre coverage. They’re also working hard to extend the network into rural areas and to connect new homes.
Our infrastructure delivery team aims to reach 3 million homes and businesses with FTTP by 2020. The team looks after millions of network records, as well as approximately 3.6 million telephone poles – in fact they replace 500 of them every week. They’re also the team taking the UK from superfast to ultrafast broadband, using a mix of technologies that produce speeds of more than 100Mbps.
Openreach’s business and corporate delivery team:
This team plans, builds and repairs business fibre connectivity services – high speed connections used by small and large business customers and communications providers. These connections sit behind the UK’s national critical infrastructure. From banks and retailers, schools and hospitals, to power stations and sports stadiums – they help customers harness the power of fibre so that Britain’s digital economy can thrive.
Their 4,500 experts help businesses connect right across the country. As well as serving businesses, the team deliver service for Britain’s Emergency Services Network and some of the biggest headline events enjoyed by music and sports fans alike, including Glastonbury festival, the British Grand Prix and the British Open golf tournament.
There are around 1,500 people within the Openreach’s headquarters. They include the executive management team, strategy, finance, legal, regulatory affairs, human resources, corporate affairs, customer, commercial and propositions as well as the chief engineer and chief technology and information officer.
